Pick how you want to meet
Some people open a chat site wanting a face right now. Others want to type for a bit first. EmeraldChat has a door for both. If you simply want to talk to strangers online and see who shows up, start there. If you're ready for camera, the guide to video chat with strangers walks through what a call is like. And if a lens makes you freeze, text chat with strangers lets you type first and switch later.
What the first minute of a random video chat feels like
People expect a random video chat to be awkward or loud. Mostly it's neither. Someone appears, you both do the little "oh, hi" laugh, and one of you says something slightly more interesting than "hey". That's it. Here's a pretty typical first minute, names left out:
Matched · 0:00
Still talking at 4:40
Nothing there is clever. One person noticed a thing, the other answered honestly, and a question came back. If you want a few more openers that work, the list in how to talk to strangers online comes from exactly these kinds of calls. And if the first minute goes nowhere, nobody takes it personally. Tap Next and the next person is usually there within seconds.

What is EmeraldChat? The short version
EmeraldChat is a browser-based random video chat. You tap start, allow your camera, and get matched one-to-one with a real person who is online right now. You can match by video, voice or text. There is no profile to polish and nothing to download, so if you were looking for a random chat app, the browser is the app: it runs on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows, and you can add it to your home screen if you like.
We're an independent site with our own team and our own rules, which you can read in the community guidelines. We aren't affiliated with, endorsed by or run by any other chat service that happens to have a similar name. We built it because most chat sites either bury you in setup or leave you alone with a "waiting for a partner" spinner. The longer story is in about EmeraldChat.
No profile to polish. No inbox to clear. Someone new, live, and a Next button for when it isn't your night.
Free to start: what costs nothing and what uses coins
We'd rather be clear about money up front than surprise anyone mid-call. Starting is free, and every match opens with a free stretch. If you want to keep a video call going past that, it moves onto coins, and a notice appears before any charging begins. This is how it breaks down:
| What you do | Cost | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Your first match | Free | No sign-up form to try it |
| Daily free matches | Free | A fresh allowance every day, shown on the start button |
| Starting a match in video, voice or text | Free to start | Pick whichever feels right tonight |
| Staying on a video call past the free stretch | Coins per minute | A notice appears before charging starts |
| Gifts during a call | Coins | Optional, never needed to keep talking |
It's free to start, and honest about the rest. Coin packages, payments and refunds are covered in help and safety.
Skip, report, block: the brakes are always in reach
Talking to someone new is easier when you know you can leave in a second. Every call has three controls in the same spot: Next to move on, Report if someone breaks the rules, and Block so they never turn up again. You never have to explain yourself to anyone.
A few habits help more than any setting. Keep your full name, workplace and address to yourself. Don't move to another app because a stranger pushes you to. If something feels off, trust that feeling and tap Next. The longer list, and what happens after you report someone, is in help and safety. If you're curious how little you need to share to get started, anonymous video chat explains exactly what the other person can and can't see.
- Nextends the call instantly and finds someone else.
- Reportflags the call to our moderators with one tap.
- Blockkeeps that person out of your future matches.

Who ends up on a random video chat like this?
Mostly people who are tired of typing into the void. Some have moved to a new city and haven't met anyone yet. Some are night owls with a quiet flat and a full battery. Some are practising a language and want a real accent instead of an app voice. A few just like the small rush of not knowing who's next.
Whoever you are, the deal is the same: be kind, be curious, and be honest about how much you want to share. If your goal is longer-term, make friends online covers how a one-minute chat turns into someone you actually message next week.
Your first match is free. See who's on right now.
