No sign-up maze and no settings to configure. Here is exactly what happens between the moment you tap start and the moment you're laughing with someone you met eight seconds ago.

How does random video chat work? Three steps from tap to hello
Most people are on a call within a minute of opening EmeraldChat for the first time. The whole flow looks like this:
- Tap Start Video ChatYour browser asks for camera and microphone permission. Allow it and you join the queue. Nothing to download, and no sign-up form to try it.
- Meet someone newYou're matched one-to-one with a real person who is online right now. There are no group rooms and no audience. Just the two of you.
- Keep talking or tap NextIf you're enjoying it, carry on. If not, Next ends the call instantly and finds someone else. Report and Block sit beside it.
That's really all of it. The rest of this page covers the questions people ask most: video versus voice versus text, phones versus laptops, and how free matches and coins work. If you want to see what a good first minute looks like, there's an example on the EmeraldChat homepage.

Video, voice or text: three ways to match
Before you start, pick how you want to meet. Each one suits a different mood:
Video
Face to face, live. The quickest way to find out whether you click.
OpenVoice
Just voices. Good late at night, or when you don't feel like being seen.
Text
Type first, decide later. Move to voice or video if it goes well.
OpenYou can change your mind at any time. A text match can move to video, and a video call can carry on with the camera off. If you'd like a general introduction to meeting people this way, talk to strangers explains the idea.
Phone or desktop: the EmeraldChat app is your browser
There's no separate app to install. EmeraldChat runs in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows. On a phone, tap "Add to Home Screen" and it opens full-screen like any other app.
If the camera doesn't start, it's almost always a permission. Check that your browser is allowed to use the camera and microphone, close other apps that might hold the camera, and reload. Step-by-step fixes for each browser are in help and safety.
Free matches, free stretches and coins
Starting on EmeraldChat is free. Your first match costs nothing, and the start button shows how many free matches you have left today. Each match also opens with a free stretch, so you can see whether you want to keep talking before anything is charged.
If you want to keep a video call going, it moves to coins per minute after the free stretch, and a notice appears before charging starts. You can also send gifts with coins, but you never have to. You top up from your wallet, and prices and payment methods are shown at checkout before you pay.
| Thing | How it works |
|---|---|
| First match | Free |
| Daily free matches | Refreshed every day |
| Start of each match | A free stretch |
| Longer video calls | Coins per minute, with a notice first |
| Gifts | Optional, paid with coins |
What happens when the call ends
Either of you can end a call at any moment. Tap Next and you're matched with someone else right away. Close the page and the call simply ends. There's no chat history to scroll back through and no inbox filling up, which is a relief for some people and a mild disappointment for others.
If you want to talk to someone again, say so before you part and agree on a time. For the longer story on turning a good match into an ongoing conversation, make friends online goes through it.

Safety is built into every call
Next, Report and Block are always on screen. Next ends a call instantly. Report sends the call to our moderators. Block makes sure you're never matched with that person again. You don't need to justify any of them.
Everyone agrees to the same short set of rules before chatting, and you can read them in the community guidelines. For what the other person can and can't see, anonymous video chat has the details.
